Veteran actor Manoj Kumar passes away at 87

Veteran actor and film maker Manoj Kumar, renowned for his iconic patriotic films like Shaheed, Upkar and Purab Aur Paschim, passed away at the age of 87 in Mumbai on Friday. He took his last breath at the Kokilaben Dhirubhai Ambani Hospital, where he had been admitted due to heart-related complications. According to the hospital's medical certificate, the secondary cause of his death was identified as "decompensated liver cirrhosis."

Manoj Kumar, born as Harikrishan Giri Goswami in what is now present-day Pakistan, made a name for himself not just as an actor but also as a filmmaker.In recognition of his significant contributions to Indian cinema, Manoj Kumar was awarded the Padma Shri in 1992, followed by the esteemed Dadasaheb Phalke Award in 2015. Fondly referred to as ‘Bharat Kumar’ for his strong patriotic themes, he also left an indelible mark with memorable films such as Hariyali Aur Raasta, Woh Kaun Thi, Himalaya Ki God Mein, Do Badan, Patthar Ke Sanam, Neel Kamal and Kranti.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi paid tribute to the legendary actor on Friday morning by sharing old photographs of Manoj Kumar on social media. In his heartfelt message, the PM expressed deep sorrow over the veteran filmmaker’s demise.
