An easy way to eat healthy snacks is to keep them within reach. When you feel hungry, you can quickly grab a nutritious option instead of unhealthy choices like biscuits, instant noodles, sugary drinks, or fast food. Cravings for junk food are more likely when unhealthy options are easily available. These cravings are seldom just habits or are caused by unbalanced breakfasts like too many carbs or too little protein. You can train yourself to choose healthy and delicious options by keeping them within your reach. It takes a few weeks to build a habit but with consistency, making better food choices will become easier.
Here are some nutritious snacks you should always have on hand:
Sprouts (Moong, Chana, Matki etc.): Try them on their own or mix with curd for a protein-packed snack. For a flavourful option, add green chutney, tamarind chutney, finely chopped cucumber, tomato, cabbage, onions and roasted crushed peanuts. Delicious and nutritious.
Soy milk: You can have it plain or mix it into a chilled mocha or cold coffee with raw cacao, coffee, a touch of coconut jiggery and ice. If soy milk is not your preference, switch it with coconut or almond milk for the same delicious recipe.
Eggs: Eggs are a great source of protein with a low calorie count, making them a perfect healthy snack. You can have them boiled for a quick protein boost or cook them into an omelette with some of your favourite vegetables for a more filling and nutritious snack.
Green tea: Rich in antioxidants, green tea promotes glowing skin and helps in weight management. You can have it plain or enhance the flavour with ginger, lemon, mint or other herbs and spices. It is very low in calories and even helps burn some during digestion.
Almonds and nuts: Containing healthy fats, they help lower bad cholesterol (LDL) and controls hunger in just a few bites. However, since nuts are calorie-dense, moderation is the key - around 6-10 pieces a day is enough for a healthy snack.
Roasted Makhanas: Makhanas are a perfect evening snack to beat that 4.30 pm hunger. Roast them and flavour with a bit of ghee, salt and black pepper. Or get creative and make different flavours like exotic herbs, peri peri or mint flavoured makhana.
Fruits: The perfect food to have on the go. Needless to say, they contain vitamins, minerals, phytochemicals that make your skin glow, your immunity strong and your hair shine.
While these healthy snacks can improve your diet, overeating them can be counterproductive. Consuming too much of anything even watermelon can lead to weight gain. Have them in moderation and keep portion sizes in check.
