Honouring Bishan Madappa, the first Mr. India Universe
“The year the title was born, it found the man it was waiting for.”
There are birthdays that mark the celebration another year in someone’s life or signify a new beginning, and there are birthdays that invite us to look more deeply at a life still unfolding with purpose and grace. Today, October 23, as Bishan Madappa celebrates this special day, it feels natural to pause and honour the remarkable path he has walked. His story does not begin with much of a fanfare or a crown. It began in the mist-laden hills of Kodagu, in a Kodava family where courage, discipline and cultural pride are lived as everyday values. From those early years a certain strength of character was already visible: the boy elected sports captain in both class 9 and 10, the young athlete selected for specialised training under the Department of Youth Empowerment and Sports, the hockey player who reached the 9th Hockey India Junior Men’s National Championship. However, a serious knee injury closed one chapter in his life – to represent India at the international level in sports and subsequently join the Indian Army. Later, he completed his studies, stepped into corporate life in Bengaluru, and might have stayed there had an ordinary lunch break not altered everything. Someone stopped him on the street and asked whether he had ever considered modelling. That single question became the opening of an entirely new chapter.

What followed was years of dedicated work on runways and in campaigns, culminating in a prestigious modelling title in 2023. By the time the inaugural Mr. India Universe competition was announced in 2025, Bishan was already an established professional, not a newcomer seeking a platform. He nearly withdrew, feeling he needed more time. His family encouraged him to go. He left big 2 commercial assignments behind and travelled to Jaipur. Those who watched him closely noticed far more than presence or physique. He spoke seven languages and made a point of using the one each fellow contestant preferred, creating ease and connection where others created distance. He rose early, trained consistently, followed a careful diet, remained courteous to hotel staff and teams alike, and carried the same composure whether cameras were present or not. On the final evening he collected three special awards — Best in Formal Wear, Best Runway Model and Top Model - before being crowned the first Mr. India Universe in history. He remains the most decorated winner in special awards that Indian male pageantry has known.
Yet the true measure of his achievement lies beyond that historic night. Many men have worn the Mr. India sash and have held the title. Most are remembered for the twelve months they held the title and then gently recede from public view. Bishan’s formal reign ended on 13 October 2026, yet the impression has not. He continued to walk as a showstopper at major fashion weeks, served as a judge at several pageants, returned to his school as the man the institution had once known as a boy, and represented his Kodava community with pride. He brought to the role a sophistication that felt natural, an eloquence that never needed performance, and a moral strength that required no announcement. In doing so he offered the country a new image of what a male titleholder could be — refined, grounded and lasting — and began a chapter in Indian pageantry that had never existed before.
There is a difference between winning a title and becoming its rightful keeper. Bishan entered a space without predecessor and became the standard against which future contenders will measure themselves. He did not inherit a legacy. He created one.
As he marks another birthday, the occasion feels less like a private celebration and more like a public reminder. The formal year may have concluded, but the excellence he brought to the role continues. In a field where memory is often short, he has already become memorable — not because the spotlight still demands it, but because the depth of character he carried refuses to fade.
Some men choose to become Mr. India. A rarer few are the ones the title itself seems to have been waiting for. Today, on October 23, on this day, we celebrate the man who was chosen.
