Some moments become memorable because they mark the end of an era, while a rare few are remembered because they mark the beginning of one. As India celebrates its 80th Independence Day today, it is perhaps fitting to look back at one such beginning in the country’s pageant history - the arrival of Mr. India Universe, a newly created national title for Indian men, conceived as the male counterpart to the Miss Universe India title, which traces India’s association with Miss Universe back to 1952. After more than 72 years of women representing India on one of the world’s most recognised international stages, 2025 saw the creation of a new chapter for Indian men. And standing at the very first page of that chapter was a young man from Karnataka. His name, Bishan Madappa. As of August 15, 2026, he remains one of his kind — the first and only man to have held the historic Mr. India Universe title. He is the man who gave the title its first identity, its first story and its first legacy.
Born in Kodagu, Karnataka, into the Kodava community, Bishan grew up surrounded by a culture where valour, tradition and a strong sense of identity have been cherished across generations. From his school years, his ability to lead and excel was evident. He was elected sports captain in both the classes 9 and 10, while his passion for sports eventually took him to the Department of Youth Empowerment and Sports, Government of India. Selected for specialised training, he moved into the DYES Hostel with a dream of representing India in sports.
Hockey became one of the defining chapters of his sporting journey. Bishan progressed to the national level and represented his team at the 9th Hockey India Junior Men’s National Championship in 2019. His sporting aspirations were accompanied by another dream close to his family — his father wished to see him in a military uniform, much like many Kodavas before him. Bishan attempted to join the Indian Defence Services, but when he suffered a serious knee injury, that journey could not progress. Perhaps, life was quietly preparing him for an entirely different calling.
After completing his college education, Bishan entered the corporate world. Then came one of those seemingly ordinary moments that can change the entire course of a life. During a lunch break, while walking outside his workplace, someone noticed him and asked whether he had ever considered modelling. A simple question became an unexpected opportunity, and that opportunity soon became a new profession. He began with photoshoots, fashion events and runway shows, gradually making a name for himself in the modelling industry.
In 2023, he won a prestigious modelling competition in Bengaluru and became a recognised face in Karnataka’s modelling scene. He went on to walk at major fashion events, work with high-profile brands and establish himself as a full-time professional model. This was one of the aspects that made his eventual pageant victory particularly distinctive: Bishan entered the Mr. India Universe competition with an already-established modelling career, rather than using the title as the beginning of one.
Then came 2025 - the year when the different chapters of his life finally converged.
The newly introduced Mr. India Universe competition was being organised for the first time as the male counterpart to the Miss Universe India platform. Bishan was selected as a national finalist, although the decision to participate was not an easy one. He initially contemplated waiting another year to prepare better and was nearly ready to withdraw, before his family encouraged him to take the opportunity. He eventually travelled to Jaipur for a competition that had never been held before.
From the very beginning, he stood apart. It was his disciplined demeanour, intelligence, sincerity and calm personality that truly distinguished him. His knowledge of seven languages became one of his most endearing qualities during the competition. Bishan made it a point to speak to his fellow Mr. India candidates in the language they were most comfortable with, allowing him to connect naturally with contestants from different parts of the country. This simple gesture made him friends with almost every contestant, and his approachable personality earned admiration throughout the competition. His professionalism contributed hugely towards his victory. Even amid long hours of photoshoots, rehearsals, multiple outfit changes and a demanding pre-finale schedule, Bishan remained composed, well-presented and courteous. He followed a disciplined routine, maintained his fitness and diet and carried himself with the same calmness whether he was in front of the cameras or away from them. His professionalism was admired not only by his fellow contestants, but also by the teams working with him and the hotel staff who encountered him during the competition. By the time the finale arrived, he had already created a place for himself in the hearts of those around him.
And then came October 13, 2025.
At Zee Studios in Jaipur, Bishan Madappa was announced as the first-ever Mr. India Universe. Before his name was called for the historic crown, he had already won three major special awards - Best in Formal Wear, Best Runway Model and Top Model. With this unprecedented sweep of three special awards alongside the national title, Bishan remains, to date, the most decorated Mr. India winner in terms of special awards, adding another remarkable distinction to an already historic victory.
His victory was more than a personal achievement. It marked the beginning of a new chapter in the Indian pageant industry. There was no predecessor whose journey he could study, no former winner whose legacy he could inherit and no established benchmark against which he could measure himself. Instead, he became that benchmark. Future contestants aspiring to wear the Mr. India Universe crown will now have a first name to look back upon - Bishan Madappa.
From the sporting fields to the national fashion runways and finally to a historic pageant stage, his journey has been one of unexpected turns and remarkable transitions. The boy who once dreamt of representing India through sport eventually found himself representing the country in a new chapter of its pageant story.
And perhaps that is what makes Bishan’s achievement truly special. He did not step into history after someone else had made it. He stood there when history was being made — and became its first name.
